Sir,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG.
28th July, 1938.
I have the honour to forward the following
report upon my recent visit to Canton.
2. On 21st July I left Hong Kong at 8 a.m. by H.M.S. Tarantula, which was most kindly put at my disposal by the Commodore-in-Charge, Hong Kong, accompanied by my wife and Aide-de-Camp. The journey was without incident: one Japanese destroyer accompanied by a trawler was passed after leaving British waters and another trawler was seen in the distance. We left Canton again on H.M. S. Tarantula at 8 a.m. on 23rd July arriving at
Hong Kong about 4 p.¤.
3.
On arrival at Canton at 3.30 p.m. I was met
by Mr. A.P.Blunt, C.M.G., the British Consul-General and certain Chinese gentlemen representing the Pacification Commissioner, General Yu Han-mou, the Governor of Kwangtung Province, General Wu Te-chen and the Mayor of Canton, Mr. Tseng Yang-fu: members of the Shameen Council were also present. After tea I visited some of the nearby places which have been bombed and in the evening I was entertained at dinner by Generals
Yu Han-nou and Wu Te-chen.
